About my practice
I’m Beatriz Herrera Campo, a multidisciplinary creator, artist and Illustrator for Art & Science working at the intersection of science, communication, and art.
For me, visuals are essential for communication and should be an integral part of it. Clear and engaging visuals contribute to the correct understanding and interpretation of scientific knowledge. They also help connect with complex ideas more deeply and meaningfully.
Whether I’m collaborating with researchers and authors or exploring my own artistic questions, I approach each project with care, curiosity, precision, and artistic sensitivity

What i work on
My work focuses on four independent but interconnected areas:
Illustration for science
I collaborate with researchers, institutions, and organizations to develop clear, intentional, and expressive visuals that support scientific communication. My role is to translate complex concepts into images that are both precise and engaging, helping audiences navigate information with curiosity and confidence.
Illustration for Communication
I collaborate with authors, editors, and organizations to create expressive visuals that guide understanding, inspire connection, and evoke emotions. These are illustrations aiming to reach broader audiences with emotion and purpose.
Fine Art
I mainly dedicate myself to portraying space from two perspectives: landscape and place. Through my artistic practice, I document the shifting beauty and diversity of my surroundings through a range of expressive forms. Likewise, I translate the emotional space of the self into figure and portrait. This is a way to observe, reflect, and make sense of the world and one’s emotions. For me, creating and giving shape to ideas is essential. It is also a generous gesture that offers refuge, especially in difficult times.
Small Works, Mini Worlds
I create intimate, small, detailed pieces that capture special moments and memories. They are released as a limited edition miniature art collections. From tiny books, wearable art, and small creations, these works are developed from close observation and a love for subtlety and can be found at my Miniatelier.
How I work
I work closely with my clients in a feedback and adjustment process to ensure that the result is aligned with their needs and vision.
My process is based on research, careful observation, and iterative sketching. I value collaboration, clear communication, and flexibility. Whether the goal is to clarify a scientific concept or evoke an emotional response, I aim to create visuals that are clear, intentional, and expressive.
My background & Experience
I’m a Geographer with an M.Sc. in Crop Protection, with experience in scientific research and academic teaching. My research focused on mapping the global distribution of cassava pests and diseases using Ecological Niche Models and spatial analysis, and on developing methodologies for pest mapping and risk assessment.
As a teaching assistant, I helped design and deliver a Master’s module and created botanical model drawings and other didactic materials to support students in developing their scientific drawing skills.

Alongside my scientific work, I have developed my illustration practice through specialized courses and continuous self-directed study, which has given me a grounded and flexible approach to visual communication. I have also complemented my creative work and professional background with business training, including scholarship-supported participation in entrepreneurial programs such as the WomActivity – Gestalte deine Zukunft, the EU‑funded Break Fellowship and the NBank Stipendium.
But it is my experience as one of the co-founders of Visuals in Science LAB that deeply shaped my practice and vision. I worked as an illustrator and handled multidisciplinary responsibilities across administrative, client relations, marketing, and business development. It was through this work that I discovered how my scientific background and artistic sensibility come together to serve a clear purpose: helping researchers translate complex ideas into compelling visuals that support them in communicating their work.
My work lies at the intersection of science and art. Built on my academic background and research experience, I approach each project with accuracy and rigor, while my artistic sensibility allows me to shape that knowledge into visuals that are expressive, intuitive, and engaging.
This same sensibility shapes my personal artistic practice. Through my art, I work across different media to reveal the beauty and emotional depth present in my surroundings, transforming my lived experiences into art, insight, and shared wisdom bringing clarity, connection, and inspiration to others.

And beyond illustration and professional life, I enjoy sewing and creating unique pieces, accessories, and utensils by repurposing old materials. I enjoy writing short texts and stories, and I am also a nature observer and occasional contributor on INaturalist. I’m also a member of the German Pastel Society (DPG) and founder, co-admin and active member of the Urban Sketchers Göttingen.
Besides that, I’m a mother of two; for me, motherhood arrived early. This has profoundly shaped the way I see and experience the world. So, this is the place where the mind of an intellectual, the soul of an artisan, and the heart of an artist found their home. Thanks for being here.
