About my practice
I’m Beatriz Herrera Campo, an artist and ilustrator for science and communication, with a multidisciplinary creative practice rooted in curiosity, observation, and the desire to transform experience into image.
For much of my life, I moved between two worlds that seemed separate: science and art. As a geographer and researcher, I learned to observe carefully, ask questions, and search for patterns that help us understand the world. As an artist, I developed another way of knowing, one that emerges from intuition, emotion, memory, and lived experience. Today, my practice inhabits the space where these ways of seeing meet.
Whether I am creating scientific illustrations, sketching on location, painting landscapes and portraits, or developing miniature art objects, I am guided by a deep impulse to observe, understand, and create. Some works begin with careful observation; others emerge from an emotion, a memory, a question, or an experience asking to be translated into form.
My practice moves between curiosity and expression, exploring place, identity, memory, emotion, and our relationship with the natural world. Through images and objects, I seek not only to understand what I encounter but also to transform lived experience into visual narratives that invite reflection, connection, and wonder.
Beyond my individual practice, I am also interested in creating spaces for exchange, whether through collective drawing experiences or exhibitions that bring artistic voices into dialogue.

What i work on
My work focuses on four independent but interconnected areas:

Illustration for science
I collaborate with researchers, institutions, and organizations to develop clear, intentional, and expressive visuals that support scientific communication. My role is to translate complex concepts into images that are both precise and engaging, helping audiences navigate information with curiosity and confidence.
Illustration for Communication
I collaborate with authors, editors, and organizations to create expressive visuals that guide understanding, inspire connection, and evoke emotions. These are illustrations aiming to reach broader audiences with emotion and purpose.

Fine Art
I mainly dedicate myself to portraying space from two perspectives: landscape and place. Through my artistic practice, I document the shifting beauty and diversity of my surroundings through a range of expressive forms. Likewise, I translate the emotional space of the self into figure and portrait. This is a way to observe, reflect, and make sense of the world and one’s emotions. For me, creating and giving shape to ideas is essential. It is also a generous gesture that offers refuge, especially in difficult times.
Small Works, Mini Worlds
I create intimate, small, detailed pieces that capture special moments and memories. They are released as a limited edition miniature art collections. From tiny books, wearable art, and small creations, these works are developed from close observation and a love for subtlety and can be found at my Miniatelier.

How I work
My work consists of tailored illustration requests, collaborations, and independent artistic projects.
When working with researchers, authors, institutions, and organizations, I engage in a collaborative process based on dialogue, research, and iterative development. I value clear communication, curiosity, and flexibility, working closely with clients to create visuals that are aligned with their goals while maintaining clarity, precision, and artistic quality.
Alongside commissioned work, I maintain an active personal practice where curiosity, observation, lived experience, and emotional exploration guide the creative process. Some projects emerge from long-term questions and careful observation; others begin with a place, a memory, an emotion, or an experience that asks to be translated into form.
Whether developing scientific illustrations, paintings, sketchbooks, miniature art objects, or visual narratives, I create work that encourages contemplation and reveals the beauty, complexity, and emotional richness present in both the natural world and human experience. Original artworks, limited-edition miniature collections, and selected pieces are available for acquisition through my website, exhibitions, direct inquiry, and the Miniatelier.
My background & Experience
I’m a Geographer with an M.Sc. in Crop Protection, with experience in scientific research and academic teaching. My research focused on mapping the global distribution of cassava pests and diseases using Ecological Niche Models and spatial analysis, and on developing methodologies for pest mapping and risk assessment.
As a teaching assistant, I helped design and deliver a Master’s module and created botanical model drawings and other didactic materials to support students in developing their scientific drawing skills.
You can find a full list of publications and research collaborations on my ORCID and Google Scholar profiles.

Alongside my scientific work, I have developed my illustration practice through specialized courses and continuous self-directed study, which has given me a grounded and flexible approach to visual communication. I have also complemented my creative work and professional background with business training, including scholarship-supported participation in entrepreneurial programs such as the WomActivity – Gestalte deine Zukunft, the EU‑funded Break Fellowship and the NBank Stipendium.
But it is my experience as one of the co-founders of Visuals in Science LAB that deeply shaped my practice and vision. I worked as an illustrator and handled multidisciplinary responsibilities across administrative, client relations, marketing, and business development. It was through this work that I discovered how my scientific background and artistic sensibility come together to serve a clear purpose: helping researchers translate complex ideas into compelling visuals that support them in communicating their work.
My work lies at the intersection of science and art. Built on my academic background and research experience, I approach each project with accuracy and rigor, while my artistic sensibility allows me to shape that knowledge into visuals that are expressive, intuitive, and engaging.
This same sensibility shapes my personal artistic practice. Through my art, I work across different media to reveal the beauty and emotional depth present in my surroundings, transforming my lived experiences into art, insight, and shared wisdom bringing clarity, connection, and inspiration to others.
This interest in artistic exchange has recently expanded into Herrera Producers Galerie, a new curatorial project dedicated to exhibitions in dialogue between my work and that of invited artists.
During my practice, I have participated in the following exhibitions in Germany and abroad:
Exhibitions
2024 — Art in Science Exhibition, Tropentag Conference
BOKU University, Vienna, Austria
2023 — Solo Exhibition: Wahlheimat – Zuhause ist dort, wo sich das Herz frei fühlt

2018 — 1st Group Exhibition, German Pastel Society

And beyond illustration and professional life, I enjoy sewing and creating unique pieces, accessories, and utensils by repurposing old materials. I enjoy writing short texts and stories, and I am also a nature observer and occasional contributor on INaturalist. I’m also a member of the German Pastel Society (DPG) and founder, co-admin and active member of the Urban Sketchers Göttingen.
Besides that, I’m a mother of two; for me, motherhood arrived early. This has profoundly shaped the way I see and experience the world. So, this is the place where the mind of an intellectual, the soul of an artisan, and the heart of an artist found their home. Thanks for being here.
